Training Objective

The primary objective Graston Essential Training is to develop an understanding of Graston Technique® therapy (GT) and how to apply it into the full spectrum of musculoskeletal treatment approaches. The course also instructs clinicians on the proper use of the instruments.

By the end of the training, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Graston Technique® brand instruments, GT treatments, potential effects, and benefits.
  • Identify and discuss the indications, contraindications (relative and absolute) of GT.
  • Review and develop a better understanding of soft tissue injury, healing and potential reactivity to instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (therapeutic and adverse).
  • Develop skill and competence in the GT application of IASTM to the major regions of soft tissue.

AUDIENCE:

Graston Essential Training is multi-disciplinary and is available to Certified Athletic Trainers, Acupuncturists, Physical Therapists and Assistants, Occupational Therapists and Assistants, Massage Therapists, Doctors of Chiropractic and Physicians.

U.S. Massage Therapist Requirements

With the guidance of some of the top advisors in the field of massage therapy, we have found the appropriate balance of education and experience that will allow massage therapists to be successful in the application of Graston Technique® therapy.

Effective Jan 1, 2019: CA Massage Therapy students who graduate post effective date must attend and graduate from an approved CAMTC school and be approved by the CAMTC for State Certification in order to be eligible.

  • Current massage therapy license or certification
  • Pass exam or be certified in MBLEx, NCBTMB, NCETMB, NCETM, or NESL.
    • or work in an office with a licensed PT, DC, or ATC
    • 750 clinical hours of education with 250 hands-on hours of experience

SCHEDULE AND FORMAT:

Graston Traning Format 

Faculty to student ratio 1:18. Maximum attendance per course is 32 participants.

Multiple teaching methods will be utilized consistent with the various levels of complexity of the learning objectives. These will include explanations, demonstrations, performance, feedback, teaching, supervised open practice, and case troubleshooting. The majority of time is spent in a hands-on, lab setting. Teaching materials include the Essential Training PowerPoint presentation and Essential Training Manuals.

Training Fee: Essential Training – $650 USD (plus applicable tax and brokerage)

CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY:

Rescheduling notice received via email, fax, or letter 15 days prior to the scheduled training is subject to a $50 administrative fee. The balance will be applied toward the same training within the next 12 months. Cancellation with request for a refund is subject to a $100 fee. Cancelling or rescheduling with less than 15days’ notice will result in the loss of 50 percent of the training fee, and the balance will be applied to the same course any time with the next 12 months. Registrants are responsible for any increase in fees. Failure to attend without notice will result in complete loss of fees. Graston Technique, LLC (GT-LLC) reserves the right to cancel a training course at any time and will issue a full refund. Registration fees are subject to change.

GT-LLC reserves the right to alter dates, times, locations, content, and faculty to accommodate unexpected needs. GT-LLC cannot be responsible for expenses incurred by registrants if the program is cancelled or altered.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

This course will emphasize a Graston Technique® examination and treatment approach for musculoskeletal dysfunction/mechanical pain that can be applied in all patient cases.

Graston Advanced Training course objectives are designed to:

  • Extend interest and commitment to professional development using Graston Technique® (GT) therapy.
  • Advance knowledge of GT examination procedures for assessing musculoskeletal dysfunction while introducing the principles of regional interdependence and functional testing.
  • Enhance clinical decision-making skills during the application of GT.
  • Advance repertoire of GT interventions for the management of musculoskeletal dysfunction/mechanical pain.
  • Develop a higher level of skill acquisition for utilizing GT while introducing movement, resistance, weight bearing, and provocation patterns to treatment.
  • Review major GT concepts covered in M1 (eight fundamental strokes, ergonomics, scar & edema techniques, physiology of GT, if necessary).
  • Provide an opportunity for participants to discuss patients that have challenged them since they started incorporating instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) into their practice.
  • Introduce advanced GT skills incorporating IASTM with movement, with resistance, in weight bearing, during provocation, and with therapeutic exercise typically prescribed for common musculoskeletal pathologies.
  • Review selected case studies that illustrate advanced clinical applications of IASTM.
  • Share most recent research findings pertaining to IASTM.

 TRAINING SCHEDULE

Faculty to student ratio 1:14. Maximum attendance per course is 24 participants.

Various teaching methods will be utilized consistent with the various levels of complexity of the stated learning objectives in order to assure their attainment at course completion. Teaching methods include lecture/discussion and instructor demonstration followed by laboratory practice. During laboratory practice sessions, small ratios of instructor-to-participants are available so that participants can receive ample instructor feedback as they practice. Teaching materials used include the Advanced Training PowerPoint presentation, prepared case analyses, videotapes of selected Graston Technique® therapy techniques, and the Advanced Training Manual including its handouts.

In 2017 Graston Technique, LLC administered the industry’s first IASTM specialist certification examination. Currently, Graston Technique, LLC has certified over 1,000 Graston Technique Specialist (GTS).
